Gentlemen of the Right Angle Club,
2017 is here and our first meeting of the year is our Annual Business Meeting.
We will be voting on our new slate of Officers and Board Members at Large, and we will be addressing the proposed By Law & Constitution updates.
The Constitution is identical to the one proposed in July. And the By Law’s have been adjusted based on input received since the July Meeting.
A summary of the changes are:
1. Structural changes to the documents that re-organize the wording without changing the substantive meaning.
2. Elimination of the Corresponding Secretary, as the office has not been filled for several years, and has been deemed unneeded as we have a part time communications employee that we pay directly.
3. Creation of a formal Membership Committee, and Membership Secretary to assure that someone is always focused on keeping our ranks full of members.
4. Adjusting the terms of office for the Treasurer, Recording Secretary, and Membership Secretary to 2 years, in order to assure continuity and encourage people to commit to these stewardship roles for longer periods of time.
5. Clarifying that the number of affiliate members may not exceed one quarter of the total allowed number of full members, which is currently capped at 85 full members.
6. Clarifying that the incoming President is responsible for appointing the Chairman of the Nominating Committee.
A point of concern in July was a proposal to allow the Board of Control to create new classes of membership without first seeking the approval of the Full Members. This proposal has been removed.
I hope you will all be able to take a look at these documents and we will be able to provide answers to any questions at the meeting tomorrow. Click links for the updated BYLAWS, and CONSTITUTION PDF’s can also be found in the Members Section of the club website at www.rightangleclub.com.
Thank you,
Dan Sossaman II, President

“The Gentlemen of Gloucester: A New Look at the First Troop Philadelphia City Cavalry”
Topic: Founded in 1774 by members of the Gloucester Fox Hunting Club (and other organizations), the First Troop Philadelphia City Cavalry is the only unit in the U.S. Army today that elects its own officers and owns its own armory. By tradition dating back to the 18th century, men who would normally qualify to serve as officers in other units choose instead to enlist in the Troop as privates, forgoing their military pay. Since the American Revolution, the Troop has thus functioned as an ad-hoc leadership school for gentlemen. Of the nearly three thousand men serving in the unit since 1774, seventeen have attained the rank of general.
January 20th – Alexander B. Bartlett and Robert W. Sands Jr., Historians
Topic: Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell – two of America’s most revered symbols of freedom, dating back to the British rule of the American colonies.
